Sure technology is great, it simplifies many things we do everyday, like keeping in touch with family and friends, helping us stay on top of pressing chores, or automating processes that would otherwise consume much of our time. It also provides us with information and entertainment but at times it can cause problems as well. How does technology fare in your life? Do you think it has made things better or worse?

As to almost anything we use, there are probably pros and cons to them. Technology is often seen as nothing but beneficial but I think otherwise. If used wisely technology can be a huge aid to humanity but the majority of people tend to abuse it.

What Does Technology Really Cost?

1. Time

It takes self control to limit how much time we spend on technology and unfortunately a lot of people find it hard to stare away from the screen. We tend to spend too much time with distractions when there are other more important things that should be finished. Allocate your time wisely and goals will be achieved sooner than you had thought.

2. Closer Relationships

Although we seem to be able to stay in touch with more people with technology, we really take less time to interact with them. How many people that you have talked to in the past year through social media or keeping touch by phone have you actually met in person? Not only this but family relations tend to suffer when we spend more time on technology and less with the people that are important in our lives.

3. Laziness

As technology continues to advance and make our lives simpler we begin to let technology take care of most of our problems. When is the last time you cooked or took a walk outside? Although there are people that like to do things for themselves the majority of us like to do things the easy way, myself included. It is not surprising then that America is one of the most obese countries in the world. The rise and innovation of technology coupled with unhealthy diets accounts for two thirds of Americans being obese or overweight! 2 out of 3 people have health risks concerning weight! That is a staggering statistic and you can’t help but admit that technology is one of the underlying causes.

Learn to use technology in small doses. Become productive again.

4. Reliance

Are you a slave to technology? Can you operate without it? It’s hard to think what we will do if we didn’t have computers, television, phones, or microwaves. What would we do all day? How would we talk to people? How would we manage to eat? Understanding the rewards and costs of technology can further benefit you with your life. Allowing more time for us to spend on things of higher significance will in the end give us a more fulfilling life. I’m not saying to do away with technology altogether, instead all I encourage is you use technology within logic and reason, spending appropriate amounts of time with it while not letting it do all your tasks.

5. Mass Media

The 21st century has often been regarded as the age of information, but I think it is the age of too much information. The media has put a rope around our necks with what it tells us. Too much time is spent learning information that does not concern us while too little time is spent learning the information that would benefit us enormously. And most times even the information we are receiving may not be %100 accurate. We are only told one side of most stories while there may be important details that have been left out on purpose. Learn to control what you see and hear, be ignorant of information, the intake of information can become a vice if not properly regulated and it is wise not to believe everything you’re told without seeing it yourself.
