Will Sony’s “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs,” playing on 3,119 screens this weekend, be number one at the box office this weekend? The 3D picture is the favorite to come out on top, but there are other choices for the movie going audiences to dine on too.
“Meatballs” faces tough competition this weekend from Universal’s Jennifer Aniston “Love Happens” on 1,898 screens, Warner Bros. Matt Damon comedy “The Informant” on 2,505 screens and Fox’s Megan Fox horror-comedy “Jennifer’s Body” on 2,701 screens. All of this makes for an interesting weekend at the theaters while Tyler Perry’s “I Can Do Ball All by Myself” will stay a player in the mix.
Positive reviews will drive business to “Meatballs” and will fill the moviegoing hunger for the family / kid demographics. A well-known children’s book, this irreverent take on “Meatballs” will play on a record setting 1,828 3D screens, including 127 Imax locations, setting the stage for high grosses thanks to the premium ticket prices for these added venues.
Sony has been pleased with the tracking of the PG-rated “Meatballs” and hopes the pictures ends the weekend in the low to high 20s million of dollars. This is likely due to the fact that family / kid pictures tend to forecast particularly accurately. Sony is looking for a result equivalent to the 2006’s “Open Season,” which opened with $23.7 million on its way to an $85 million domestic gross.
Sony is also going to open “Meatballs” wide in the foreign markets of Mexico an United Kingdom on the same day as in the United States. A very logical move industry executives say due to the ongoing enthusiasm for animated films world-wide.
