One of the best and most exciting aspects of Bollywood is the amazing clothes that are worn, many of which have been designed by top Indian designers. One of India’s most distinguished designers, Neeta Lulla has designed costumes for over 300 films throughout her career, which spans 26 years. The designer has won various prizes including being four times National Film Award winner for Best Costume Design in a Film.
Neeta Lulla has adorned many Bollywood beauties in her luxurious outfits. Some of which have been Priyanka Chopra, Shilpa Shetty, Kareena Kapoor and Deepika Padukone. The designer has managed to successfully create designs that emphasise the personality of the wearer and the character they represent as well as providing wonderfully striking garments to please the audience and add to the aesthetic feel of the films.
A famous film that stands out because of the exquisiteness of the Bollywood sarees was Jodha Akbar. This film is magnificent! Wherever the camera lands, vivid colour bursts out at the audience. There are elaborate patterns all over walls, highly decorated horses and elephants. Richly coloured fabric billows and the highly adorned characters wander through opulent rooms. The supremely talented and gorgeous actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan stared in some of the designer’s most stunning creations. The Bollywood sarees and lehengas were incredibly opulent, this was predominantly due to the lustrous accessories used to emphasise the regality of the protagonists.
It was important for the designer to get the designs right for the period represented in the film, which is the Mughal Empire. Neeta Lulla took up to 6 months to research for the Bollywood sarees and other costumes for the play partly because of the lack of information available. The main source of inspiration was from paintings. The designer stated that one of the most important factors to consider was creating costumes that appropriately evoked the period but at the same time were close enough to real life for the audience to relate to them.
The colours used tended to be a warm colour palette of emerald greens and soft, sensuous yellows for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s costumes and then beiges, browns and golds for Hrithik. The designer claimed that her favourite costume in the film was Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s wedding dress, which was sumptuously ornate.
Another important moment for the costume designer is creating a stunning outfit for the actresses to wear whilst processing down the red carpet for the premieres. A celebrity who looked stunning in one of Neeta Lulla’s Bollywood sarees was Amrita Rao. The saree was a strong salmon colour with a rich black and gold embroidered border. The bottom half was mesmerizing with delicate gold detailing and her whole look was completed with dazzling gold jewellery.
Neeta Lulla’s Bollywood sarees are spellbinding mainly because of designer’s eye for fantastic styling and patterns.
