Released in 1996, and starring Michael Jordan, famed NBA Basketball star, Space Jam was a combination animated/live-animation film which features Bugs Bunny and other Looney Tunes cartoon characters. It was released by Warner Brothers Family Entertainment. Additionally, Acclaim Entertainment used the theme of the movie to make a video game and Sega created a pinball game of the same name. For all practical purposes, the movie was popular with a variety of age groups and it generated revenues of over $335 million. The movie is also the debut for Lola Bunny, Bugs Bunny’s girlfriend and love interest.

The plot of the movie

In the movie, Michael Jordan is pursuing a baseball career and has retired from the NBA. He is also the focus of attention of one Mr. Swackhammer who owns an extraterrestrial theme park. His minions known as the “Nerducks” are dispatched to capture the different Looney Tunes characters in order to make them an attraction at his theme park which was failing financially at the time. The Looney Tunes characters were living below the surface of the Earth.

The Looney Tunes team then retaliates against Mr. Swackhammer and the Nerducks and challenge them to a game of basketball. The reason for this was that the Nerducks were not very tall, so challenging them to a game of basketball was the course of action that the Tunes took as a result. However, Mr. Swackhammer and the Nerducks were quite devious and kidnapped certain NBA players (e.g. Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, Larry Bird, and others) to staff their team unfairly against the Tunes.

As a result of this deviousness, the Tunes decide to recruit a reluctant Michael Jordan to help them win the game. Interestingly enough, Jordan has an extendable arm which he would use to win the game for the Tunes team. As the game is getting to its climax, Jordan uses his arm to score the final point which guarantees the Tunes’ victory. Bill Murray (formerly a Saturday Night Live cast member) enters this world to play for the Looney Tunes team as well, as he has always wanted to be a professional basketball player.

In the movie, Space Jam the Tunes team is brutalized by the style of play that the Nerducks display, and one by one, all of the players are eliminated except for Jordan, Bugs Bunny, Lola Bunny, and Daffy Duck. Enter Bill Murray to complete the team and help in the Looney Tunes plight as they fight off the Nerducks and win the game.
